Back in 1975 14 september after 6 months of planning 50 people left te hapua to walk to wellington which was a 1000km walk the reason for this was to stop people from selling maori land the march was led by whina cooper at the time 79 years old along the way people joined in the hikoi for support when they reached parliament down in wellington 29 days later around 5000 people were with them to give a petition that 60,000 people had signed to the prime minster
